Perimenopause is the transition before your last period. It often starts somewhere in your forties, sometimes earlier, and can last several years.
What you may notice
- More irregular or heavier periods.
- Hot flushes and night sweats.
- Poorer sleep, waking more often.
- Mood swings, irritability or trouble concentrating.
- Joint aches or less energy.
Not everyone has symptoms, and symptoms can also have other causes.
What may help
- Strength training and daily movement, for muscles, bones and mood.
- A regular sleep rhythm and a cool bedroom.
- Less alcohol and caffeine if you notice they worsen hot flushes or sleep.
Help
Do your symptoms affect your daily life? Discuss them with your GP. Several treatments are available, with and without hormones. Primal Ember does not advise on this, but you can track your symptoms and bring that overview to your appointment.
